I just received some pre-loved ram after months in the post due to covid. I popped it into my pcs and it doesn't work at all. I can't remember why I thought it would work as so much time has gone by, but I did some research at the when I bought it.

The ram is 4gb Apacer ECC REG PC3-12800 CL11.

I tried it in 2 pcs:

Lenovo M92p i5 3470

CAPS3: dh77eb mobo and intel i7 3770S cpu

I also replaced the cpu in the Lenovo with a xeon e3 1260L in case the original cpu didn't support ecc ram.

The pc boots perfectly with my standard Hynix ram but fails post with the apacer ecc ram.

If anyone can tell me definitively whether this ram should work with either of my PCs (or not) I would be most grateful.

Hello billgr it looks likely that the chip sets do not support ECC ram both CPU and chip set have to support ECC for it to work.
Kind Regards Rob

Hi billgr,

I suspect you have bought registered/buffered memory, and that kind is not compatible with your setup. Pretty sure because it have "REG" in the type designation. You must use unbuffered ecc or unbuffered non-ecc memory.

Correct! It is REG ram. I'll see if I can get a suitable mobo or unbuffered ecc ram.

Which do you think will sound better?
