A friend suggested I try both ES40 and 41 so I gave it a try.
40 seems to give a slightly larger, more holographic, atmospheric, presentation but is thinner tonally, vocals are more edgy
41 gives more tonal colour and smoother vocals, but less airy when it matters
I tried all the combinations on a chosen set of test tracks and scored them. My personal preferences are (best first):
1) Controlpc: 40 Audiopc: 41
2) Controlpc: 41 Audiopc: 41
3) Controlpc: 40 Audiopc: 40
4) Controlpc: 41 Audiopc: 40
Note, ES40 was always set to below normal cpu priority (which I prefer) and ES41 at default low cpu priority.
Has anyone else tried to mix and match?

Updates: having tried #1, I've decided to stay with #2 - ES 41 on both PCs. Being sensitive and fanatical about vocals, I guess I'm not ready to trade #2's merits for those of #1. Thanks Bill again for the spot on assessments.

This was difficult because what each does best is hard to give up. First place was awarded to the best combination. I'm sure that with a different system, track selection, or taste it'd be easy to swap the places around, especially 2 and 3. My test tracks were spread across mostly pop, rock and modern jazz.Note, ES40 was always set to below normal cpu priority (which I prefer) and ES41 at default low cpu priority.

You beat me to the punch.....I was going to report the results of the very same test which I conducted a few days ago.
I came to the same conclusions, with exactly the same pecking order for the 4 combinations listed!
ES 40 on Control PC and ES41 on Audio PC gives the proverbial 'best of both worlds'

That's really amazing for us to be so consistent @Cloclo.
Of course, you should play what rings your bells @Thuan.
For completeness I also compared the following combinations against the new reference:
1) Controlpc 40 + 41 Audiopc 40 + 41 - Atmosphere very good, not as full tonally
2) Controlpc 40 + 41 Audiopc 41 - Atmosphere not as good, very full tonally (too much?)
3) Controlpc 40 Audiopc 40 + 41 - Atmosphere not as good, tonally not as full
4) Controlpc 41 Audiopc 40 + 41 - Atmosphere ok, tonally ok
IMO none of these was as impressive as Controlpc 40 (below average) and Audiopc 41 (low) over a range of tracks.

Another great ES version. Already.
I've settled on 42 on the controlpc and 41 on the audiopc.
This combination is a delight for electric bass and piano bass notes in particular. Rich, tight, and textured.
Nothing seems lost or diminished.
Great work oryaaaaa!

ES42 - listen to how the kick drum is separated from the bass guitar; listen to how each instrument/voice is cast in its own layer; listen to the quiet between each note.
