Looking at the trinity: Control Point - Media Server - Renderer, we all know that the latter can have a great impact on sound quality. Also, most will agree that the control point can make a difference in that respect.

So how about the Media Server? With all other things being equal, can switching from one Media Server to the other change the sound? Of course I tried myself, and I think I hear some difference between

   BubbleUPnP - FEMTOserver - JPLAY FEMTO

   and

   BubbleUPnP - JR MC24 (running on another pc than the renderer) - JPLAY FEMTO

But I could be wrong...

Of course, otherwise we wouldn't even look at creating JPLAY femtoServer... :)

In my setup the best result so far is Audirvana+ on a Windows PC functioning as control point and media server, and streaming upsampled material to JPLAY FEMTO on a minimised Server 2016 core PC, optimised with AO and FP. This sounds more detailed and musical than BubbleUPnP => FEMTOserver => JPLAY FEMTO.

Maybe this has to do with BubbleUnP vs Audirvana?

Or with the fact that I cannot fully use AO optimisation if I want to map FEMTOserver to my NAS?

Next thing I might try is hooking up a usb drive with (a backup of my) Music Library to the FEMTO PC. In that case I need a long usb cable so that I can put the drive in another room. It is otherwise too noisy.

Can you play DSD files?

It just proves what Marcin said, the more powerful control point is, the better SQ will be. Having been using BubbleUPnP for a while, I should try running a control point on a 3rd PC.

Yes, you could try but can't install Bubble UPnP on a pc, can you? What control point are you going to install? Kinsky? It is not stable and I am not sure it would sound better.

Can you play DSD files?

The short answer: no, unless I convert it to PCM.

The long answer: yes, using two setups:

(1) Audirvana+ => DSD256 => Linux machine with MPD => Amanero / Lampizator DAC

(2) Audirvana+ => PCM176 => Server 2016 core machine with FEMTO => Audio Aéro DAC

The first natively plays DSD, or converts PCM to DSD.

The second converts DSD to PCM.

I like to switch between the two as I am fond of both – quite different – sound signatures.

With the current combination of Amanero firmware and driver I can only play DSD on the Linux machine, not on Windows.

In that case, I am looking forward to your findings :-)

By the way, I don't think that Audirvana+ allows for a separate media server, but (@taxman2) something like UPPlay does, I believe.

Upplay + Femtoserver + FEMTO is sounding terrific here. A bit better than Upplay + Minimserver + FEMTO.

Thank you for your reply.
I wanted to know if Audirvana Plus + JPLAY FEMTO DLNA renderer plays DSD now, but your environment does not allow you to test this.

With Memu, an android emulator, you can use Bubble UPnP on a PC.  For this it is important to activate bridget network within Bubble UPnP.

Hi, are you still using Audirvana + ?
I installed the trial version on a laptop and like the GUI and features... sounds great too (as far as I can tell from the laptop speakers)...
I have not time yet to build a control PC to test... been traveling for work the past few months... so was wondering if you still think this better in your system..
Thanks !
