Hi All,

Noting that AO 2.20 is aimed partly at WS '16, any views on whether it's worth the upgrade from WS'12 please?

Regards

Andy

For me very much so. Considerable improvement in my dual PC setup going from Server 2012R core to Server 2016 GUI. I hope I will be able to go to Server 2016 core for my audio PC some day...

Did a clean installation of Windows 2016 Standard Core by removing Windows 2012 R2 during the installation process. (NO UPGRADE)

With the combination of Audiophile Optimizer 2.20 beta 2b JPlay/HySolid/ProcessLasso, I must say this completely beats my previous installation of the same setup on Windows 2012 R2

Better imaging/ soundstage, more detailed information, much better bass.

Using the posts on the forum to get the JPlay/HySolid did not work for me.

I will post a detailed step-by-step instructions to get the JPlay/HySolid combination working in Windows 2016 Core in a few days.

Stay tuned!!

I deleted the old server2012 CORE AO partition, and made a brand new installation with server2016 GUI and AO! The improvement is very noticable! I'm waiting for server 2016 core step-by step installation instructions.. THX!

With Leon's help I was able to install 2016 Core and listen to music via JPLAY Mini, even through there's a roadblock on using sconfig to configure network setting. So, I can't use the pc as audio pc, just single pc works without network. Here's the error:

sconfig > select option 8 (network IP and DNS setting) > list network card > show index# > select index# > get "invalid index #" > sconfig exits.

Not wanting to live with a sounding but cripple 2016 Core setup, I'm installing 2016 GUI to see how a 2012/2016 GUI dual pc setup performs.

Hope AudioPhil or someone experienced teaches me how to overcome the about error.

Hi Thuan

As discussed via email one can use the cmd files in the AO\Tools folder to list network adapters as well as to set all ip related settings. Please see page 5 of our PDF Guide for details.

Best,
AudioPhil

Now that I am finally able to use the Combo384 Amanero in Server 2016 core mode:

after some festive listening sessions with Upplay / Hysolid and control PC in Server 2016 GUI mode, for me there is no doubt how the audio PC affects SQ:

Server 2016 core > Server 2016 GUI > Server 2012 core > Server 2012 GUI

with each '>' a noticeable step forward :-)

The cmd files worked wonders, thanks so much AudioPhil. I'm trying to get them both, WS2016 Core audio PC and control PC, to talk to each other before installing HySolid.

In my Server 2106 dual PC setup I now have my audio PC on core and my control PC on GUI.

Would the SQ improve when I also go to core on my control PC ?

I am happy to work from the command line and use Q-Dir, sconfig etc. However, there is one little program that I am attached to that will not work with core as it needs the Windows file explorer: FlacWavLoader. When I drag music files from Jriver into it, it converts them to wav, puts them in a directory of my choice (for instance RAMdisk) and then plays them with HQPlayer.

Updating JRiver I guess would still work, not via the update menu in JRiver itself, but by downloading and installing a new release.

Any other important limitations of Server 2016 core on a control PC?

Like you I'm running dual PC with Core audio PC/GUI control PC. This way I can easily get HySolid to work with JPLAY without fuss.

As promised, here is the step-by-step to get HySolid to work with JPlay in Windows Server 2016 Core mode (it worked for me like a charm.)

Configuring HySolid to work with JPlay on Windows Server 2016 Core

·         Uninstall Fidelizer

·         Enable remote access to access Audio-PC from another computer

1.       From the Windows 2016 Core computer:

netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Remote Service Management" new enable=yes

2.       From the remote GUI computer (Windows 10 or Windows Server 2012 R2):

3.       Open a Command Prompt and enter the following command to access the Netsh CLI on a remote machine:

netsh -r hostname -u domain\admin -p password (hostname = Windows 2016 computer name; password = password to login to Windows 2016 computer)

4.       From the remote GUI computer (Windows 10 or Windows Server 2012 R2 open the Services applet

5.       Select connect to another computer

6.       Type in the IP address of the Windows 2016 core server

7.       Go to the service for Hysolid and Hysolidm

8.       Stop both services

9.       Change the logon

10.   Type:

.\user_name (user_name is the logged on account name on the Windows 2016 computer, very important that you type the .\ or the service will not start)

11.   Type password and confirm

12.   Do for both services (Hysolid and Hysolidm)

13.   Start the services

14.   Go to the Windows 2016 Core computer

15.   Check that the HySolid service has the correct logon information from the services applet in Task Manager

16.   Run AO and optimize as you normally would

17.   Configure JPlay to use KS

18.   Configure HySolid on the iPad/iPhone

19.   Play and enjoy music.

20.   Install and configure ProcessLAsso (if you use it)

21.   Install and configure Fidelizer

22.   Play and enjoy music

Hope this helps any of the members who have issues getting HySolid and JPlay to work

Installing Windows Server 2016 isn't walking in the park but doable. Getting HySolid to work with JPLAY is challenging and tricky. Thank you AudioDoc for documenting the process and sharing your experiences.

On a side note, I reiterate what has been said about 2016: whether in GUI or Core mode, it offers awesome SQ that's way better than my 2012 Core Dual PC setup. To compare the difference in SQ, it's like upgrading from a Shure dynamic microphone to a Neumann condenser, both handheld. Strongly and whole-heartedly recommended!

I can answer my original question now '..any better?'

Yes indeed, self, it's much better - same positive results as stated above; better separation, better bass etc

Now off you go and figure out Core mode...
